How can you tell which type of finish our dyed leathers have?

For the realization of your leather goods, Radermecker Tannery offers you a range of full grain leathers vegetable tanned dyed.

What is dyed leather?

A dyed leather is a leather that has a aniline, semi-aniline or pigmented finish.

What is leather finishing?

The purpose of leather finishing is to embellish the leather, to give it a specific shade and shine. It helps to protect the leather. The finishing of leather affects the look, feel and durability of the leather. Leather finishing can be aniline This is a thin transparent layer, which does not alter the texture of the leather. This thin film retains the natural appearance of the leather. The leather finish can also be pigmented, i.e. an opaque layer of pigment with the aim of completely covering the asperities of the leather. But it can also be semi-aniline (mixed aniline and pigment). Niagara saddle leather has a black, chocolate, havana, cognac and victoria aniline finish, and Pykara saddle leather has a black, chocolate, havane and cognac pigmented finish.

What is vegetable tanning?

The vegetable tanned is the oldest process. It requires the use of vegetable tannins such as quebracho, mimosa or chestnut bark powder. The choice of tannins used depends on the species of animal from which the hide comes and the properties required for the leather.

Niagara dyed saddle leather or Pykara dyed saddle leather, which to choose?

  • Niagara dyed saddle leather has a very natural look due to its aniline finish, so you can see the wrinkles of the animal for example. This finish gives the Niagara leather an excellent patina.
  • Pykara dyed saddle leather has a pigmented finish which is intended to completely cover the grain of the leather. This finish ensures that the leather is well protected against light, rubbing and stains. This makes Pykara leather waterproof. The appearance of the leather is more uniform and much less natural than the aniline finish.
  • For your leather creations that need to withstand external disturbances, we recommend our Niagara full grain leather. For example, you can make collars for dogs, Niagara leather will withstand the animal's perspiration.
  • For the upholstery of your furniture in rigid leather, we recommend our Pykara full grain leather, you can upholster a work surface of an office for example, Pykara leather will resist to the stains that it can undergo.
  • For "standard" leather goods (belts, wallets, etc.), our two saddlery leathers, Pykara and Niagara, can be used, the difference being made according to your needs in terms of a more natural finish or not. Marking or moulding can be carried out on both Pykara and Niagara saddle leathers.
