We talk about our artisanal leather tannery Radermecker on audio

Podcast - In the skin around the leather

How is leather made? By whom? For what uses? What are the commitments of the professionals in the sector?

Podcast - In the skin around the leather

"In December 2021, I interviewed Loïc Honoré for the Les Petits Boudoirs podcast "Parcours d'un repreneur d'entreprise". We kept the editorial line centred on his experience as a business owner. But my discussions with Loïc made me want to go to Comines, on the Belgian border, to the tannery that he co-manages with his partner, Nicolas.
The tannery's craftsmen explained to me their work and the process of transforming the skin into leather.
One thing leading to another, this dive into the world of leather made me want to continue my discoveries: other craftsmen, designers, trainers in the sector, lovers of the material. Mrs Séverine Puthod

"Dive with me into the heart of the Radermecker tannery workshop.
Jean-Christophe, David, Yoann, Higinio and Pascal are artisan tanners. In this episode, they explain the process of tanning hides: the stages of transformation of the hide into leather.
Here, they mainly use vegetable tannins: an ancestral know-how, inherited from 150 years of practice.
What does vegetable tanning mean? Where does the hide come from? What is done with the less "beautiful" hides? Welcome to the workshop: the tanners tell you all about it.
This episode is the result of a day of interviews at the Radermecker tannery. I would like to thank the craftsmen of the tannery as well as Loïc, Nicolas and Mylène. Mrs Séverine Puthod

"Jean-Christophe, whom everyone calls Jean, is the workshop manager at Radermecker Tannery. In this episode, he shares his passion for management. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jean, during my reportage at the tannery, in January 2022. A pleasure because when he talks to me about his job, the training he has undergone and his team, he smiles and his eyes shine.
He has been a tanner for 30 years, 30 years of learning from others: colleagues and customers alike. He has learned all the gestures and techniques of tanning. Little by little, he became a "leader": the one who tells his team what to do.
Then he followed management training courses that totally changed his way of looking at things. He became a "manager": one who encourages autonomy and initiative.
He loves to learn and pass on. Like me, give him your attention; I promise you, you'll grow out of it ;)" Mrs Séverine Puthod

"In the previous episodes, we travelled to the tanners' workshop and Jean-Christophe, the head of the workshop, shared his passion for management or how to "make the members of his team love leather".
Today, it is the independent designer Flavia Redouin Innecco (Studio Tessigraph Design), who welcomes me to L'outil commun, the workshop she shares in Lille La Madeleine, with other independent designers.
Flavia Redouin Innecco stopped designing textiles when she realised that she was participating in the programmed obsolescence inherent in fast fashion.
From leather goods to upcycling, Flavia tells us about her journey in the world of leather and her love for the material.
I see her as a committed designer.
* She is always looking for the usefulness of her work: creating an object that would serve no purpose would be counterproductive. So she exchanges a lot with her clients; she questions the use of the final product. Then she diverts, transforms and reuses materials initially intended for something else. Materials that would previously have been destroyed.
* She puts her clients in touch with local garment workshops in the Hauts-de-France region and with people who have been forgotten in the industry.
Her work therefore has an environmental and social impact.
I feel she is full of energy; she does not mince her words. Listen to her!
Flavia talks about her career and her experiences in the world of flexible materials. Mrs Séverine Puthod
