Leather goods: Niagara or Pykara leather?

For your saddlery leather goods creations, we have 2 leathers available: Pykara & Niagara in  shoulder.

But what are the differences between these 2 leathers? We help you make the right choice!

The finish of the leather :

First of all, the difference between Pykara leather and Niagara leather in shoulder lies in the leather finish :

Niagara vegetable tanned leather for leather goodsLeather Niagara has a pure aniline finish. The aniline finish consists of the application of a light transparent layer, of low thickness without altering the texture of the leather. This thin film retains the natural appearance of the leather and all the beauty of this material. This finish also aims to preserve the particularity of each hide. On the Niagara, you will be able to see for example the wrinkles of the animal. This finish gives the Niagara leather an excellent patina.

The leather Pykara has a pigmented finish. This finish consists of applying an opaque layer of pigment in order to completely cover the roughness of th leather. This finish ensures the good protection of the leather against light, rubbing and stains. The leather is thus waterproof. The appearance is more uniform and much less natural than the aniline finish.

This finish also has an impact on leather care. Indeed, a leather with an aniline finish will absorb the feeding unlike a leather with a pigmented finish, as you can see on this video :

The feeding of the leather :

The second difference between Pykara leather and Niagara leather in shoulder is in the feeding of the leather :

Niagara leather have a wax bath food. This provides in-depth feeding which makes the leather easier to cut and work with, as well as  greater water resistance.
This feeding allows to have a leather maintenance-free since the fat is constantly given on the surface of the leather. The leather with wax bath food allows  to resist in external environment. being full of fat, it will reject any external disturbance (water, saline environment, etc.).

Pykara leather has an emulsion feeding. It is a liquid oil feeding that we add to our drums. This food is suitable for hide or leather goods requiring a high fat-free finish.

Our advice for the different types of realization:

For your leather embossing work:

We therefore recommend our Pykara natural leather. Embossing on our Niagara leather is not recommended as the patterns will fade over time due to its wax bath food. On dyed Pykara, its pigmented finish may flake off when embossed. The light food on natural Pykara and its raw vegetable appearance give it ideal properties for taking shape.

For your leather creations that must resist external disturbances:

We recommend our Niagara leather. If you are making dog collars for example, Niagara leather will resist the animal's perspiration.

For upholstering your furniture in rigid leather :

We recommend our  Pykara leather. You realise the upholstering of a work surface of an office, for example, Pykara leather will resist the stains that it can undergo.

For "standard" leather goods realizations :

For example, for making belts or wallets, our 2 leathers Pykara and Niagara can be used. The difference will be based on your need in terms of a more natural finish or not.

For the realization of leather marking:

Marking can also be done on our 2 leathers Pykara and Niagara.

For the realization of leather moulding:

Moulding can also be done on our 2 leathers Pykara and Niagara.
