Leather production - The finishing work

Leather is a noble material that requires precision and quality work throughout the process of transforming hides into leather.
The Radermecker Tannery shares with you the stages of leather production carried out within its new buildings and thanks to its new machines: "The finishing work".

Leather finishing with our new finishing machine

What good is a beautiful leather, if the finish does not enhance it. At RADERMECKER®, our favorite finish is a thin layer of aniline, bringing out the essence and natural color of the leather.
The right balance is both to protect the leather and give a sufficiently even color, but also to let it drink the food over time and let it look natural. Each hide is different, so each finish must be adjusted to achieve a similar result.
The purpose of leather finishing is to embellish the leather, to give it a specific color and shine. It helps to protect the leather. The finishing of a leather intervenes in the aspect, the touch and the solidity of the leather
The finishing of our leathers is now realized thanks to our new machine whose new technologies increase considerably our environmental performances.

The druming of leather

The druming is done with our saddle leather Angel, our soft leather, mainly used for horse saddle seats. The fulling is done in a special fuller on dry leather for 3 or 4 hours.
The objective is to give more suppleness to the leather and also to "bring up" (accentuate) the natural grain of the leather.

The altera

After passing through the finishing machine, full-grain "rigid" leathers (Niagara, Boyoma, Pykara, Gavarnie) are then altered.
This altered machine can be compared to a "large iron", which smoothes the grain side of the leather. This makes the leather smoother, and the grain less visible.
This operation can also be used to give the leather a glossier finish, if required.
And finally, for suiffed leathers (Niagara and Boyoma), this machine reliquefies the grease added to the leather during the tallow process, and as it cools, hardens the leather even further.

The Press

The press makes it possible to create an artificial grain on the grain of the leather. The grain is defined according to the plate which is adapted on the press.
Our flaps leather Printed Gavarnie is grained Pécari grain during this operation.
On the video, the plate of press installed is in grain called "Mercedes grain" that we applied on our saddle leather Angel, for the realization of article of leather goods, as for you can admire it on the creations of our customer Mrs Marlies Davans.
